Here are a few quick ways to mitigate the health effects of the smoke:

  1. Stay indoors as much as possible

  2. Replace your home HVAC filter with a clean one (or strap a filter to a fan and run the fan)

  3. Mask up when outside (construction dust masks are great for this but even your cloth mask you’ve been sporting for covid makes a difference)

  4. Don’t trust your nose, check the local sensor network (smoke scent chemicals aren’t always present when the conditions are still dangerous)

  5. Keep activities low effort

  6. If you absolutely need to get out of the smoke get way upwind (for Reno/Tahoe that means go west at least to Truckee depending on smoke severity) elevation does not significantly impact air quality since the most dangerous fine particulates are carried on even the lightest breezes.
