Weekend Outlook 4/23-4/25, 2021

What comes to mind when I say it’s going to be a typical Reno april weekend?

For me, it’s attending Aces opening day game in a t-shirt with enough blankets for the likely 7th inning blizzard.

And that’s exactly what we’re looking at this weekend. Sunburns and frostbite with a healthy side of headwind. National Weather Service is giving a decent probability of Sunday/Monday’s weather including a significant amount of water in the passes. Accounting for rain shadow, they still expect more out of this system than anything we’ve seen since the beginning of March. If you’re getting out, Friday will be prime, Saturday morning will still be very nice, and the winds will start up midday with precipitation arriving in the wee hours Saturday/Sunday and continuing through the rest of the weekend. Sunday temperatures are still expected to be cool but not yet freezing so we will keep an eye on the conditions as they develop. Considering how dry everything is already, this system may make for prime dirt or it may put some places back in the fragile levels of wet. Considering how long it is expected to stay warm and wet, I’d be surprised if any of the lingering snow banks up around the top of Mahogany Forest survive.

As always, if you get out on the mountain, submit a trail report and let us know how it is. I’ll update the front page as reports come in.
