Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 01/16-01/22, 2023

Trail Outlook: Traction Aids Suggested

  • Snow, ice, and mud. The recent warm and cold cycling storms melted a lot of lingering snow at trailhead elevations and then covered it right back up. Soils are very wet under variable depth of snow all over Peavine and the Truckee Meadows. This week is looking mostly calm and cold with a few snow flurries so be prepared for limited traction. While the snow is not deep enough on Peavine for the rare backcountry ski, it is deep enough in the trees in Galena for some excellent snow shoeing and fat biking. Recent social media posts suggest that there is a decent snow shoe trail packed in on Whites Creek. If you don’t want to brave the mountain roads, this is a rare time to get to see those middle elevation trails in their winter wonderland attire. Higher in elevation, Nevada Nordic grooms trails in the trees to the West of Tahoe Meadows for public usage. The trails are primarily designed for cross country skiing, but are also great for snow shoes and fat bikes. For more information and the latest grooming reports, check out their Facebook Group page linked here.

This Week’s Events

  • Tuesday, January 17:

  • 5:45 pm

    • Silver State Striders are running the Sparks Marina loop starting from the Scheels parking lot. This is a very welcoming group for all skill levels. The loop is around 2 miles and you can run as many laps as you like. Given the dark and snow, headlamps, traction devices, and reflective clothing are a must. Check their Facebook Group Page for more details. You can also find their training schedule on their website at this link.

  • Wednesday, January 18:

    • 6:45 pm

      • Bike Night Reno will be rolling out a hardy group of riders of all kinds from the Space Whale in Downtown. As their name suggests, this is a night ride so lights are required. Whether it’s a simple headlamp and taillight or full on burner bike light-splosion is entirely up to you. Expect it to be cold and wet so dress appropriately. This is a mostly flat road ride friendly to all wheeled contraptions at an extremely social pace. For more information, follow @bikenightreno on instagram.

  • Thursday, January 19:

    • 5:45 pm

    • 6:30 pm

      • Biggest Little Trail Stewards are having their monthly meeting at Mi Casa Too on West 4th Street. This is open to all and is a great way to get involved behind the scenes in grassroots local trail building. See you there!

  • Saturday, January 21:

  • Sunday, January 22:

    • 9:30 am

      • Radical Adventure Riders of Reno (RAR) are leading a snowshoe hike in Tahoe Meadows to Chickadee Ridge. This is a very popular and easy snow shoe adventure that commonly includes hand feeding birds. They will be meeting to carpool at the Raleys in Galena. Final go/no-go decision will be weather and road conditions dependent and announced on their Discord channel. For more information, follow @rar.reno on Instagram.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. All of this amazing snow is cycling through stability and instability in the backcountry. Knowing where to look and when to stay home can make the difference of coming home.

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email  and it might get listed. See you outside!

All portions of the Peavine trail network are expected to have significant snow, ice, and/or mud this week. January 16, 2023.
