Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 12/26/2022-01/02/2023

Trail Outlook: Serious Soaking

  • A warm wet and windy storm is expected to start wetting the area early Tuesday morning and alternate between rain and snow through the week. All trails are expected to be heavily saturated and muddy. Once the storm passes, there will be great conditions for fat bikes and snow adventures. If you didn’t know, Nevada Nordic grooms trails in the trees to the West of Tahoe Meadows for public usage. The trails are primarily designed for cross country skiing, but are also great for snow shoes and fat bikes. For more information and the latest grooming reports, check out their Facebook Group page linked here.

  • Trail Damage Warning: Whites Creek had some serious flooding in August. There is major trail damage along much of the lower section of trail as well as some of the upper section. The local trail managers are all aware of the damage and would appreciate users seeking alternate routes until they are able to get repairs done. Due to the extensive nature of the current damage, that may not be this year. If you are planning on doing the Dry Pond loop, consider an out and back on the Thomas Creek side.

This Week’s Events

      • Bike Night Reno will be rolling out a hardy group of riders of all kinds from the Space Whale in Downtown. As their name suggests, this is a night ride so lights are required. This is a mostly flat road ride friendly to all wheeled contraptions at an extremely social pace. For more information, follow @bikenightreno on instagram.

      • Silver State Striders will be running 7 ish miles of hills starting and ending at Eclipse Running (Moana & Lakeside). Headlamps and reflective clothing are a must. Traction aids are also suggested due to the chance of ice on the route. Check their Facebook Group Page for more details. You can also find their training schedule on their website at this link.

    • New Years Eve

  • Sunday, January 01:

    • New Years Day

    • TBD

      • Silver State Striders are hosting their annual Peavine Challenge. Due to the weather forecast the preliminary plan of 9am at the East Keystone Canyon Trailhead is tentative. They will update their Facebook Group Page, linked here, on Friday with more solid details.

    • 10:30 am

      • Radical Adventure Riders (RAR) Reno and Northern Nevada Bikepacking are teaming up to bring you Coffee Outside. This week’s morning cup of micro-adventure on bikes will meet at Crissie Caughlin Park. More information about joining can be found by following @coffeeoutsidereno on Instagram.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Avalanche conditions will be very dynamic with the storm coming in this week. Knowing where to look and when to stay home can make the difference of coming home.

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email  and it might get listed. See you outside!

All portions of the Peavine trail network are expected to have significant snow, ice, and/or mud this week. December 26, 2022.
