Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 4/04-4/10, 2022

Trail Karma Opportunity:

  • Biggest Little Trail Stewards is collaborating on a fundraiser for two new park benches at Sierra Vista Park. The fundraising goal is $1500. These benches will be much like the benches around the Peavine trail network and will be much appreciated. To donate on the go fund me campaign or share the link, click here.

Trail Outlook: Receding Snow

  • I’m trialling a new map of conditions. Instead of writing pages of words on specific trail conditions, I’ve created a general map outlining where the rough boundaries are for either limited poor conditions or extensive poor conditions. See the image at the bottom of the post. If you like either the map or the long posts, please give me feedback so the site can be most useful for you.

  • In general, above first bench and upper mountain are holding the last snow. The limited patches of snow on Halo and Snow Terraces are likely to submit to the forecasted 80f high this Thursday. The wind into Monday night will continue to wick away moisture so I’m confident that areas between the Total Recall Bench and the Mahogany bench are going to firm up for all but the most protected areas.

Note for dog owners:

  • Off trail areas around Las Brisas, Halo, and Crispy Bacon are seeing high coyote traffic at close range in the early mornings and evenings. They have demonstrated general caution and disinterest in humans and dogs, but are not showing significant fear. There have been reports of one or more active dens with pups so there may be females more willing to protect instead of avoid. In general, if you are out with dogs in the late afternoon, or exploring off trail, you may want to plan to keep the pups leashed. We are in coyote territory and they will defend dens or fight back if harassed.

This Week’s Events

  • Tuesday, April 05:

  • 5:15 pm

    • Tuesday Night Ride Group (TNRG) is riding Peavine from the Keystone East parking lot. Since this overlaps with Striders, you may consider parking at Keystone West and riding Leadership back the quarter mile. If you are new to TNRG rides, there is no mass start so bring a friend or introduce yourself to who ever is around when you set off. Ride as long as you like. Most TNRG rides will have an after ride social at the start point so if you want to join in, pay attention to the flow of riders heading back. Check their Facebook Group Page for the most current updates.

  • 5:45 pm

    • Silver State Striders are running an out and back from the Keystone Canyon East trailhead to Three Trees for ~8 miles. Meeting at the Keystone East parking lot. More details on their website.

  • Wednesday, April 06:

    • 6:45 am

      • Dawn Patrol ride. I’ll start from the Keystone Canyon west trailhead and plan to climb to the mahogany bench via the bacons. Send me a message to let me know you’re coming.

    • 5:00 pm

      • Reno Wheelmen’s weekly Verdi road ride. Start and end at the CVS parking lot on California Avenue. There is a one time waiver to be signed so give yourself enough time before the 5pm roll out to set up and sign in. This is an out and back with social pace on the out and choose your own adventure pace on the way back. Lights, including rear red, and reflective attire suggested as well as be prepared to service your own flats should that happen.

  • Thursday, April 07:

    • 5:00 pm

      • Reno Del Fuegos will be mountain biking Peavine trail from the Rancho Softball fields. This is a very welcoming group that rides beginner to intermediate routes. For more information check out their Facebook Group.

    • 5:45 pm

      • Silver State Striders will be running out and back on dirt from Riverbend to Sandy Hill for ~8 miles. More details on their website.

  • Saturday, April 09:

    • 8:00 am

      • Silver State Striders are running in California again this weekend. The run will be out and back in Foresthill starting from the Forest Hill school and offering up to 28 miles. More details on their Facebook Group Page.

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email  and it might get listed. See you outside!

Potential mud and snow areas this week. I’m leaving midmountain red until I see the conditions first hand or someone sends a trail report telling me otherwise. April 04, 2022
