Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 3/28-4/03, 2022

Trail Karma Opportunity:

  • Biggest Little Trail Stewards is collaborating on a fundraiser for two new park benches at Sierra Vista Park. The fundraising goal is $1500. These benches will be much like the benches around the Peavine trail network and will be much appreciated. To donate on the go fund me campaign or share the link, click here.

Trail Outlook: Drying Well

  • I’m trialling a new general map of conditions. Instead of writing pages of words on specific trail conditions, I’ve created a general map outlining where the rough boundaries are for either limited poor conditions or extensive poor conditions. See the image at the bottom of the post. If you like either the map or the long posts, please give me feedback so the site can be most useful for you.

  • In general, above first bench and upper mountain are still snowbound as well as limited patches of snow on Halo and Snow Terraces. A lot of snow melted this past weekend, the rain showers expected overnight and today (Monday) did not deliver noticeable damping, and the expected warmth and dry will continue to improve access this coming week. Keystone Canyon melt water flow is beginning to slow so while you can expect mud at crossings, I suspect it will be firming back up.

Note for dog owners:

  • Over the past few weeks I’ve been getting the dogs out on the mountain for longer off trail hikes in the ridges and canyons above Kings Row, Leadership Parkway, and Keystone Canyon. We have very consistently been spotting groups of coyotes at close range moving through or bedded down away from the main trails around 4-5pm. They have demonstrated general caution and disinterest in us, but are not showing significant fear. My dogs are slightly smaller than coyotes (~tall 25lbs). In general, if you are out with dogs in the late afternoon, or exploring off trail, you may want to plan to keep the pups leashed. We are in coyote territory and they will defend dens or fight back if harassed.

This Week’s Events

  • Tuesday, March 29:

  • 5:15pm

    • Tuesday Night Ride Group (TNRG) is riding Sierra Vista Bike Park again. Starting from the parking lot off Beaumont Parkway. If you are new to TNRG rides, there is no mass start so bring a friend or introduce yourself to who ever is around when you set off. Ride as long as you like. Most TNRG rides will have an after ride social at the start point so if you want to join in, pay attention to the flow of riders heading back. Check their Facebook Group Page for the most current updates.

  • 5:45pm

    • Silver State Striders are running a loop of High Road to Hole in The Wall and back along the ditch trail for ~8 miles. Meeting at Woodchuck Dr. parking lot. More details on their website.

  • Wednesday, March 30:

    • 5:00pm

      • Reno Wheelmen’s weekly Verdi road ride. Start and end at the CVS parking lot on California Avenue. There is a one time waiver to be signed so give yourself enough time before the 5pm roll out to set up and sign in. This is an out and back with social pace on the out and choose your own adventure pace on the way back. Lights, including rear red, and reflective attire suggested as well as be prepared to service your own flats should that happen.

      • Reno Tahoe Junior Cycle/ Reno Devo is holding their Wednesday Night Worlds Short Track Cross Country mountain bike races at Hidden Valley Regional Park. These races happen every other week through July and funds raised go toward local youth athletes training and racing. There is no day of registration so come out and cheer on the racers and then register for the next race on the event website here. Novice heats start at 5pm, Open rolls at 5:30pm.

  • Thursday, March 31:

    • 6:45am

      • Dawn Patrol ride. I’ll start from the Keystone Canyon west trailhead and plan to climb to the mahogany bench via the bacons. Send me a message to let me know you’re coming.

    • 5:45pm

      • Silver State Striders will be running out and back on dirt from Riverbend to Sandy Hill for ~8 miles. More details on their website.

    • 6:30 pm

      • Biggest Little Trail Stewards monthly meeting will be held at MiCasa Too on West 4th street. These meetings are open to anyone and a great way to learn about what goes on behind the scenes for trail planning, building, and repair. For more information, check out their Facebook event page.

  • Saturday, April 2:

      • Silver State Striders are running Peavine this weekend. The run will start and end at Rancho San Rafael with multiple turnaround points offering up to 23 miles with a solid amount of climbing. More details on their Facebook Group Page.

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email  and it might get listed. See you outside!
