Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 3/21-3/27, 2022

Trail Karma Opportunity:

  • Biggest Little Trail Stewards is collaborating on a fundraiser for two new park benches at Sierra Vista Park. The fundraising goal is $1500. These benches will be much like the benches around the Peavine trail network and will be much appreciated. To donate on the go fund me campaign or share the link, click here.

Weekend Wrap Up:

  • March 18, 2022 3:00 pm

    • Total Recall to the first bench is down to a single 10 ft stretch of mud on the switch back section about 100 vertical feet below the bench. Stagecoach all the way down to the towers is completely dry. -Matt H.

  • March 19, 2022 10:30 am

    • Rode Keystone canyon up - its mostly dry but there is a lot of water flowing down from the canyon, expect mud pits after each creek crossing. Rode Poedunk back: completely dry, except one spot at the top below an ice patch that keeps it went and muddy. -Anon

  • March 20, 2022

    • Snow drifts persist on Halo between Snow Terrace and Bacon Strip and on Bobsled.

I rode up Las Brisas Trail from Las Brisas Blvd and it was dry. -Anon

  • March 21, 2022 9:15 am

    • Climbing Evans to Tad Dunbar was good, Tad Dunbar has some deeply rutted puddles, Total Recall and Lingles had some nasty bits. Climbed the roads to 2nd bench. Descended Bacon Strip to Halo. Still some walk arounds on Halo. Exited Keystone Canyon, muddy in the middle. -Kurstin G. Strava Trip Link with Pictures

Trail Outlook: Beyond Nice

  • Time to slather on the sunscreen, the bluebird spring days are upon us!

  • I’m trying something new this week. Instead of writing pages of words on specific trail conditions, I’ve created a general map outlining where the rough boundaries are for either limited poor conditions or extensive poor conditions. See the image at the bottom of the post. If you like either the map or the long posts, please give me feedback so the site can be most useful for you.

  • In general, above first bench and upper mountain are still snowbound as well as limited patches of snow on Halo and Snow Terraces. With the persistent heat this week it is possible the line will retreat uphill but there is still a lot of snow in shaded areas so I’m still rating that as unlikely. Due to melt water, Keystone canyon is also showing more mud at all stream crossings. This will continue for the foreseeable future.

Note for dog owners:

  • Over the past few weeks I’ve been getting the dogs out on the mountain for longer off trail hikes in the ridges and canyons above Kings Row, Leadership Parkway, and Keystone Canyon. We have very consistently been spotting groups of coyotes at close range moving through or bedded down away from the main trails around 4-5pm. They have demonstrated general caution and disinterest in us, but are not showing significant fear. My dogs are slightly smaller than coyotes (~tall 25lbs). In general, if you are out with dogs in the late afternoon, or exploring off trail, you may want to plan to keep the pups leashed. We are in coyote territory and they will defend dens or fight back if harassed.
