Upcoming Events 5/24-5/31

Thank You!

Thank yous go out to everyone who volunteered for the finishing work on the Sierra Vista Connector. Finishing this last leg means we now have 100% single track connection from Sierra Vista Park to the Peavine Trail network. If you haven’t already gotten out on the Beaumont to Avenida de Landa section, it is a beautiful hillside traverse with some interesting white dirt portions.

Thank yous also go out to everyone who came out with cookies or an appreciation for cookies to support Tahoe-Pyramid Trail on the cookie ride. I’ve been seeing plenty of posts about adventures using the trail between Truckee and Reno. If you ever see an issue, they have a report feature on their website so they can plan to get volunteers or land managers out in a timely manner. If you, or your organization, would like to take additional steps to support the TPT, they are always looking for individual volunteers as well as organizations to fill particular needs. Details on their volunteering page.

New Weekly Post

With the outdoor season now in full swing, I thought it may be of service to all of y’all if there was a singular place to see who is doing what in the coming week. At first, this list will be very incomplete because it relies on me finding out about the event before it happens. My hope over time is y’all will give me a heads up and some details, just like the trail reports, so that this can serve as a singular place for a quick look at what is on the calendar for the week. Since the greater Reno/Tahoe area is so abundant with activity opportunities, I can see this getting out of hand with listings. With that in mind, here is a rough sketch of the (loose) boundaries for getting events on these posts:

  • Active Events (Run, Bike, Hike, etc) or

  • Multimodal Advocacy (Trail Karma, Council Meetings, etc)

  • Truckee Meadows Local

  • Access Changes Impacting Trails (Fire, Construction, Other Events, etc)

If you are an event organizer, or just a participant that knows of something coming up, send me an email about it and you might see it on the weekly post.

This Week’s Events

(Memorial Day Week Edition)

  • Weekday Mornings:

    • Truckee Meadows Bike Alliance’s President, Ky Plaskon, is making himself available for anyone to chat about bikes and bike advocacy most mornings during bike month. He will be hanging out at The Dropout’s bike shop and coffee bar on Pine Street downtown. This week he can be found there Tues, Thurs, and Friday from 7-7:30am. Look for the guy with the wavy silver hair and big smile.

  • Tuesday, May 25, 5:30pm :

    • Tuesday Night Ride Group, as their name suggests, will have their weekly mountain bike ride. The ride changes location each week so check their Facebook group or join their google email group to get direct updates. This week (5/25) they are meeting at the very popular East Keystone parking lot and rolling out around 5:30pm. With beautiful weather, if you aren’t early, expect the lot to fill and have to use the additional parking at West Keystone 1/8th of a mile further down Leadership Parkway. If this is your first TNRG ride, know they don’t have a mass start or group guides so it’s on new riders to either bring their own friends or make some by introducing yourself.

  • Tuesday, May 25, 5:45pm :

    • Silver State Striders’ tuesday evening group run/hike is departing from the Thomas Creek Horse Trailer Parking lot. Groups will have their choice of just the Dry Pond loop (6mi) or adding a 3 mile kicker up to the wilderness sign on the Thomas Creek side. Details on their website.

  • Thursday, May 27, 5:45pm:

    • Silver State Striders’ thursday evening group run is departing from the River Bend pullout. Groups will have their choice of the somersett road climb out and back(8 mi) or adding 2 miles by continuing on to Whale Rock before turning back . Details on their website.

  • Saturday, May 29:

    • Silver State Striders are providing volunteer support to the Western States Training camp. Contact the Striders for more details.

  • Sunday, May 30:

    • As part of the Black Rock Rendezvous, Friends of Black Rock/High Rock is hosting a guided gravel ride along the western side of the playa. The starting point is a solid 2 hour drive from the city, RSVP is required, and riders are expected to be self supported. Details and sign up are available through the event website.

  • Monday, May 31:

    • Memorial Day!

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email and it might get listed. See you outside!
