Trail Outlook

Extended fall is OVER. If you haven’t looked outside yet, I’ll just say that you may want to start waxing those skis and unpacking the cold gear. We have already had over a tenth of an inch of water overnight and the last few hours have been as snow. With forecast highs around 40f (4C) this weekend, and high relative humidity, this water isn’t going to go anywhere unless it soaks down. With lows around 17f (-8C), we can expect hard freezes and ice on all trails in the early mornings. If you have studded tires or shoe spikes, the conditions will be great. Winds are expected to stay calm until Sunday which makes for excellent outdoor conditions but also slow drying. Late afternoon on Friday and Saturday will be either excellent tacky surfaces or peanut butter mixed with ice in the shade. Sunday is our next round of wintry mix and it is expected to arrive in the dark hours of the morning and last all into Wednesday of next week. With the recent rapid shift from warm dry to cold wet, there is a chance for freezing fog which always makes for a surreal outdoor experience. No matter what, pack extra layers, water, and food if you’re headed out this weekend.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Currently there are some weak facet layers sneaking around under this new white stuff. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.
