Weekend Outlook 9/16-9/19, 2021

Forest Closures:

Forest closures continue to be in effect through at least September 17 (or 27) for California national forests. All pacific southwest division forests are entirely closed. All parts of the Humbolt-Toiyabe forests within the state of California are closed to dispersed camping but open to day use with additional restrictions for areas around the Tamarack burn scar. For additional details see the most recent previous Upcoming Events posts.

Currently, Truckee Meadows public lands east of the Stateline or Carson/Sierra crest are not impacted. I’ll update this post as I get additional information.

Weekend Events:

Here are the events that are on the radar for this weekend:

Thursday, September 16:

  • 5:45pm

    • Silver State Striders are running the Steamboat Ditch Trail from the Manzanita Drive crossing. Roughly 8 miles total out and back.

  • Saturday, September 18:

    • Reno Wheelmen will be holding the first Cyclocross race of the season at Hidden Valley Regional Park. Registration and schedule at this link.

    • 7:00am:

      • Silver State Striders will be running the Toll Road climb into Virginia Highlands starting at the bottom of Toll Road. An out and back route with varying distances and elevations with the longest distance being 24 miles.

Trail Outlook

Cooling trend this weekend but entirely within the really nice range. Everything is looking to be great conditions to be outside with just a chance of water coming from the sky on Sunday afternoon. Afternoon/Evening breezes expected but nothing overwhelming. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see some of our amazing great basin sunsets with this very nice weather pattern. As long as we don’t see fire issues, this weekend is looking amazing.

Additionally, last weekend the Galena/Sky Tavern area trails were showing first indications of color change. You may see more fall colors if you venture into the more forested areas around the valley.

Be kind, be safe, and if you get out, enjoy.
