Is Peavine Dry?

Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 1/17-1/23, 2022

June-uary In the Sunshine

  • You know how in the start of most zombie movies, the shadows are where the danger lurks? Like before we actually see zombies, we get these shots looking out of the darkness like we are seeing the main character through the eyes of something too sinister for sunshine? That’s what the trails on Peavine are like this week. If there is shade, there is water. If there is altitude, there is water. Given what came through on trail reports and what I saw this past weekend, I suspect that Las Brisas from Kings Row Trailhead to the Las Brisas connector will be open and rideable for out and backs. Much of the top of Rancho has persistent wet spots, but the Rancho-Keystone connector is dry, and Evans canyon and below the N should be firming up as well. Sierra Vista perimeter trail is good but most of the single track is still soft including the Sierra Vista connector. Big cornices on the slopes above Poedunk keep it well saturated before the bench and it is still snowed over beyond the bench. Keystone canyon is firm to the Fisticuffs junction so you can get to the Poedunk bench if you climb Fisticuffs. Up Keystone from Fisticuffs has running water and very soft spots. All segments of the Keystone connector are firm enough too as well as the Peavine Dam area.

Weekend Trail Report Recap

  • Friday, 1/14, 12:30pm:

    • Lower third of Keystone Canyon is rideable with care in a few damp spots. The creek has overflowed into parts but tons of rock to ride through these areas. Above the rocky more technical area, the trail is too wet.

Chicken Loop over near Golden Eagle in Sparks is very rideable on southern exposed side. Zipper is still unrideable.

  • Sunday, 1/16, 3:00 pm:

    • Heard some rumors that Sierra Vista was nearly dry...While the main dirt path up high is good to go, even the high sun exposed single track has wet spots remaining and gets wetter as you drop into the lower loop section. Anything that is shaded is still a PB mess including the connector trail which is a mess.
