Trail Outlook

  • Heat and afternoon wind are the names of the game this weekend. Stay hydrated and sunscreened so that you can enjoy the entire great weather weekend outside. Some upper mountain trails are still impacted by remaining snow, but much of the lower mountain and other regional parks and trails are dry and popping with wildflowers. See you on the trail!

  • This winter has reshaped a LOT of trails. Keep your head up and speed down even on trails you knew well last season. Nearly every trail has new hazards this year.

  • North Valleys facing trails and any single track climbing out of Hoge road, or more northern access points, are still holding snow and generating mud above the Total Recall Bench. Halo, Stagecoach, Norton’s Toll Road, Three Trees, and Total Recall all feature mud or snow in increasing amounts as you get higher and away from downtown facing. Mahogany Bench can be reached via the Bacons and Scrub Brush can be descended if you’re willing to climb right back up, but all the spurs leading into the upper Total Recall area still feature significant snow and mud.

  • Tahoe Pyramid Trail in the canyon between Truckee and Verdi is beginning to clear up. There are some significant trail damage sections but TPT reports they are not closing the trail this weekend, just advising extreme caution. There will be closures starting monday. See below for details.

Truckee Meadows Trail Damage:

    • Peavine’s Keystone Canyon is washed out for a couple hundred yards above the intersection with the Fisticuffs trail.

    • Lower Thomas and White’s creek trails are dry but both feature major washouts and creek running in trail sections. Please avoid for the time being as there are no easy reroutes for the damaged areas.

Local Trail Closure: In Carson City, King’s Canyon loop and waterfall trails are closed due to a rock fall. Check out the monster boulder and debris field on Carson City Parks and Open Space’s Facebook page here.

Upcoming Temporary Trail Closure: May 1-3, Tahoe Pyramid Trail from the Quilici Ranch parking area to the Fleish bridge will be closed to allow heavy equipment to repair rock falls. Please plan to access the trail upstream at Farad instead of Verdi for those days. More details available on TPT’s Facebook page linked here.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Spring heat brings new risks in the backcountry. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.

April 27, 2023 Conditions. Snow, ice, or very wet mud expected above the Total Recall Bench, at the top of the Bacons, near Snow Terraces, and all high elevation North facing slopes.
