Trail Outlook

  • Spring in full swing! Mid and upper mountain trails are still impacted by remaining snow, but much of the lower mountain and other regional parks and trails are dry and popping with wildflowers. The weather is expected to be calm, clear, and warm this weekend. Time to get outside!

  • This winter has reshaped a LOT of trails. Keep your head up and speed down even on trails you knew well last season. Nearly every trail has new hazards this year.

  • North Valleys facing trails and anything climbing out of Hoge road, or more northern access points, are snowbound. Very large snow fields and cornices are sitting on or above PoeDunk, Halo, Bacon Strip, Stagecoach, and Total Recall.

  • Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, Hidden Valley Regional Park, North Valleys Regional Park, Sierra Vista Park, Steamboat Ditch Trail, Centennial Park (Carson City), Prison Hill, Jack’s Valley Loop, Lower Clear Creek Loop, and lower sections of Clear Creek Trail are dry. Sierra Vista’s lower basin had some very soft mud so expect to stick to the upper 2/3rds of the park until it firm up. Tahoe pyramid Trail from Verdi towards Truckee is dry but has experienced a number of washouts and small landslides. Travel with care.

  • Peavine Trail Damage: Keystone Canyon is washed out for a couple hundred yards above the intersection with the Fisticuffs trail. If you would like to connect the East Keystone and Hoge Road trailheads, please use the ridgeline 4wd road on the Rancho San Rafael side (East side) of the canyon. PoeDunk trail on the West side of the canyon still is dry up to the bench but features snow over the trail near the connection with Total Recall that can be bypassed by using a 4wd road.

Local Trail Closure: In Carson City, King’s Canyon loop and waterfall trails are closed due to a rock fall. Check out the monster boulder and debris field on Carson City Parks and Open Space’s Facebook page here.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Spring heat brings new risks in the backcountry. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.

April 13, 2023 Conditions. Snow, ice, or very wet mud expected above foothill trails and all North facing slopes. Some mud expected in the lower basin of Sierra Vista Park. Major trail damage on Keystone Canyon trail.
