Trail Outlook

  • The warming trend we are seeing right now is excellent for trail drying but the overnight freezes are protecting the shaded snow. Every trail segment on the mountain continues to have snow patches either directly across large portions of trail or on the mountainside above and draining enough meltwater across them to keep the trails boggy. By Sunday afternoon sections of Las Brisas and Keystone to Kings are likely to firm up just enough, but there is a chance of rain on Saturday that could cancel that progress. On the East side of the valley, Hidden Valley Regional Park should have some firm soil on the single and double track within the main park fences. On Sunday, the only snow remaining was on the small North facing slope where the single track follows the Eastern fence connecting the North and South grassy areas. Avoiding that one segment is easy with the rest of the trails firm enough to run and ride on.

  • There has been increasing chatter on social media about the conditions at Sierra Vista Bike Park. The main gravel cart path is likely to be firm enough to ride and run, but there are a LOT of shaded patches crossing most of the single track so please continue to stick to just the cart path for now so we don’t have to spend a lot of time and money, that could be put toward new trail, repairing ruts and rebuilding damage. As long as the weather continues this warming trend, SVP and other regional trails are only weeks away from being in excellent condition for an epic trail spring.

  • I haven’t been able to get down to Carson City recently so any trail reports from down there would be appreciated. Trails east of Prison Hill along the carson river tend to dry quickly and I know y’all are excited to get out in the sunshine. If anyone has eyes on dirt down South, send in a trail report and let us know where we can get some miles and smiles in.

  • Outside Northern Nevada, I’m hearing reports that the West Slope (Auburn, Rocklin, Folsom, etc) trails are firmed up nicely and riding and running really well. I’m sure if one were to post up on any of our local social media groups, there would be others rad outdoor enthusiasts willing to share gas to get over the hill for a day.

  • If you’re a mountain biker, now is an excellent time to beat the rush for spring bike maintenance at our local bike shops. Come March and April, wait times for annual fork and shock service can be as far out as May. Get your gear in for that tune up now so that you have a nice refreshed setup come prime spring conditions.

  • There are plenty of groomed trails around Tahoe Meadows and Chickadee Ridge. If you head up to use the groomed trails on foot, fatbike, or snowshoe, please stay right on the trails so that cross country skiers can enjoy the routes they have fundraised and volunteered to have up there. There is also enough snow that snowshoeing and fatbike riding in the Galena trail network is epic right now. Enjoy the winter wonderland and if you hit the resorts on Saturday, pack snacks and patience to sit in traffic.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. The snowpack is diverse and conditions are location dependent. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.

February 09, 2023 Conditions. Snow or very wet mud expected across the Peavine Trail network.
