Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 05/08-05/14, 2023

IPD Reader Survey:

  • You may have noticed the obnoxious banner show up at the top of the front page this past weekend. I’d love to know more about who you, my dear readers, are so I can continue to improve this website. Please take a few moments to complete the IPD Reader Survey linked here. The responses will help me better understand who is using the website, how, and what I can do to keep being a useful resource in our trails community. Thank you in advance!

Trail Outlook: Warming

  • We will continue to see some evening breezes and maybe a shower or two during the week, but overall we are looking at an absolutely gorgeous week for being outside.

  • This winter has reshaped a LOT of trails. Keep your head up and speed down even on trails you knew well last season. Nearly every trail has new hazards this year.

  • Peavine Mid and Upper Mountain Snow: Between Total Recall bench and Mahogany Bench, snow lingers on many trails or indirectly is melting onto the trails leaving large mud sections. Mahogany bench itself is melted free but Mahogany Forest trail climbing to Peavine access road has a number of large snow fields covering it still.

  • Tahoe Pyramid Trail in the canyon between Truckee and Verdi is clear.

Truckee Meadows Trail Damage:

  • Peavine’s Keystone Canyon is washed out for a couple hundred yards above the intersection with the Fisticuffs trail.

  • Lower Thomas and White’s creek trails are dry but both feature major washouts and creek running in trail sections. Please avoid for the time being as there are no easy reroutes for the damaged areas.

Local Trail Closure: In Carson City, King’s Canyon loop and waterfall trails are closed due to a rock fall. Check out the monster boulder and debris field on Carson City Parks and Open Space’s Facebook page here.

Trail Karma Opportunity:

  • Thursday, May 11:

  • Saturday, May 20:

    • Silver State Striders are looking for volunteers to help staff their annual Silver State 50/50 trail race on Peavine. This is a great way to have fun outside, give back to the trail community, and meet a lot of very appreciative runners. For more information about the race and to contact them to volunteer, check out their event website linked here.

      • Reno Del Fuegos are riding mountain bikes from Hoge Road trailhead. This is a very welcoming group of intermediate riders who ride at a relaxed pace. • Bike Night Reno will be rolling out a group of riders of all kinds from the Space Whale in Downtown. As their name suggests, this is a night ride so lights are required. • Radical Adventure Riders (RAR) Reno are leading a beginner friendly bikepacking sub-24 hour overnight (S24O) trip. This ride is for FTWN-B riders and will be no drop but bring your own kit and food. An S24O ride involves a ride to the campsite, eating dinner, sleeping overnight, coffee (maybe breakfast) in the dawn, and riding back. This is a quick sort of adventure ride that works great for learning the overnight skills of bikepacking as well as how to pack an overnight kit. For more details, follow @rar.reno on Instagram.

    • 8:00 am

    • 10:00 am

      • (Carson City) Muscle Powered is hosting their annual gear swap at the Brewery Arts Center (King St). Plenty of outdoor gear to browse through for summer and winter adventures. For more information or to register to sell your gear, check out their website or their Facebook Group Page.

  • Sunday, May 14:

    • Mother Day

      • Just a friendly reminder to you trail crazy people. Take a moment to wash off the dirt (or get dirty… you do you) and say thank you.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Rapid temperature cycling and new spring snow are remaking the hazard landscape daily. Knowing where to look and when to stay home can make the difference of coming home.

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email  and it might get listed. See you outside!

May 08, 2023 Conditions. Snow, ice, or very wet mud expected above the Mahogany Bench. Mixed conditions between the Total Recall and Mahogany Benches.
