Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 12/19-12/25, 2022

Trail Outlook: Warming to Mud

• No precipitation expected between now and the holiday weekend. Temperatures are expected to warm slightly so we can expect the snow lines to pull up the mountain. That means more widespread mud. Temps aren’t expected to be so warm as to firm up any whole trail segment on Peavine, but you may find clear trails in Hidden Valley Regional Park. This is a great time for fat bikes and snow adventures. If you didn’t know, Nevada Nordic grooms trails in the trees to the West of Tahoe Meadows for public usage. The trails are primarily designed for cross country skiing, but are also great for snow shoes and fat bikes. • Trail Damage Warning: Whites Creek had some serious flooding in August. There is major trail damage along much of the lower section of trail as well as some of the upper section. The local trail managers are all aware of the damage and would appreciate users seeking alternate routes until they are able to get repairs done. Due to the extensive nature of the current damage, that may not be this year. If you are planning on doing the Dry Pond loop, consider an out and back on the Thomas Creek side.

  • Silver State Striders are running from Huffaker school through Bartley Ranch park. This is a very welcoming group for all skill levels. This run will be the 5ish mile loop and headlamps and reflective clothing are a must. Check their Facebook Group Page for more details. • Wednesday, December 21:

  • 6:45 pm

    • Bike Night Reno will be rolling out a hardy group of riders of all kinds from the Space Whale in Downtown. As their name suggests, this is a night ride so lights are required. Whether it’s a simple headlamp and taillight or full on burner bike light-splosion is entirely up to you. Expect it to be cold so dress appropriately. This is a mostly flat road ride friendly to all wheeled contraptions at an extremely social pace. For more information, follow @bikenightreno on instagram.

• Thursday, December 22:

  • 5:45 pm

    • Silver State Striders will be running 7 ish miles of hills starting and ending at Eclipse Running (Moana & Lakeside). Headlamps and reflective clothing are a must.   • Christmas Eve

  • 8:00 am

    • Silver State Striders are running 10 ish out and back from the Glen Hare Center (350 Hunter Lake Drive) winding through Old Southwest Reno. Check their Facebook Group Page for more information. You can also find their training schedule on their website at this link.

• Sunday, December 25:

  • Christmas Day

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Avalanche conditions are very location dependent right now. Knowing where to look and when to stay home can make the difference of coming home.
