Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 10/11-10/17

Water from the SKY?!

That’s right folks, water. In both clear and white form. Falling from the sky for more than just a moment. I know what you’re thinking and I’m thinking it too. Where in the hell is my rain shell? And do I really want to dig for all that winter equipment when it’s only the second week of October?

While I can’t tell you what random pocket, backpack, fanny pack, or glovebox your rain shell has been mouldering away in all summer, if the weather service is to be believed, the answer to the second question is nope. At least not if you have indoor things to do this fine gray Monday morning. They claim that this week will be calm and cold with a return to more seasonally normal temperatures towards the latter weekdays.

So give yourself a little extra time while there is water on the roads. Let the trails soak up and firm up. And marvel at the return of the white capped peaks around the Truckee Meadows. If you do meander up to the snow line on our favorite mountain, send in a trail report and I’ll get it out for everyone’s benefit.

Youth Job Training Opportunity

  • Reno Bike Project has begun recruitment for the upcoming FutureCycle cohort, to begin in January 2022. Specifically, the organization is looking for six youth, ages 16-24. Preferred candidates are those who think bikes can change lives, are interested in teaching, aren’t afraid to get dirty or afraid of a challenge, communicate well, are curious and excited to learn, and are fully COVID-19 vaccinated. Applications are due by December 20. Link for more info: https://renobikeproject.org/program/futurecycle/

This Week’s Events

  • Tuesday, October 12:

    • 5:30pm:

      • Tuesday Night Ride Group, as their name suggests, will have their weekly mountain bike ride. The ride changes location each week so check their Facebook group or join their google email group to get direct updates. This week (10/12) they are riding from the Rancho San Rafael Softball Fields and rolling out around 5:30pm. If this is your first TNRG ride, know they don’t have a mass start or group guides so it’s on new riders to either bring their own friends or make some by introducing yourself.

    • 5:45pm:

      • Silver State Striders will be running at Bartlett Ranch Regional park. Departing from the Huffaker school parking lot, there are hilly 5 and 7.5 mile options. More details on their website.

  • Wednesday, October 13:

    • 4:30pm

      • Reno Wheelmen’s casual Verdi road ride rolls as a group from the CVS parking lot at Booth and California Ave at 4:30pm. Note the time change. ~25 miles paved with the option to add loops in Verdi and multiple regroup points on the way out for those less familiar with the route. Open to members and non-members alike. Details on their website.

    • 5:00pm

      • Reno Del Fuegos mountain bike club is riding Peavine trials from the Hoge road trailhead. They are recommending bringing a jacket and headlamp.

  • Thursday, October 14:

    • 5:45pm

      • Silver State Striders are running the Steamboat Ditch Trail from the Wood Chuck Drive crossing out to Hole-In-The-Wall and back. Roughly 8 miles total out and back. More details on their website.

  • Friday, October 15:

    • 1:00pm

      • Nevada Nordic is hosting a trail maintenance day for their Tahoe Meadows XC ski trails. More details and RSVP/coordination contact information on their Facebook Event Page.

  • Saturday, October 16:

    • 8:00am

      • Silver State Striders are running from Pinehaven at the top of Caughlin Ranch to Hole-In-The-Wall on the ditch trail and back via a very hilly dirt loop of 18 miles. More details on their website.

  • Sunday, October 17:

    • 8:00am:

      • Muscle Powered Carson city will be road riding from Fremont Elementary School.

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email and it might get listed. See you outside!
