Upcoming Events 6/01-6/06

The Heat is ON!

And with it, fire season. If you missed the column of black yesterday morning, we had a fire in the Thomas Creek drainage. Luckily teams were able to jump on it and contain it before it went wild, but it was one of four in the truckee meadows this past weekend and at least one was a run away campfire. So just a reminder, tahoe basin is under campfire restrictions at least through the end of the month. For Nevada, the Carson Ranger District covers the truckee meadows and closures and regulations can be found here. Currently, we are not in a campfire restriction period, but it’s always good practice to fully drown any campfire or leftover coals, make sure chains or other metal that can spark are not hanging loose, and pack out what we packed in. Nobody got time for smoke season.

New Weekly Post

With the outdoor season now in full swing, I thought it may be of service to all of y’all if there was a singular place to see who is doing what in the coming week. At first, this list will be very incomplete because it relies on me finding out about the event before it happens. My hope over time is y’all will give me a heads up and some details, just like the trail reports, so that this can serve as a singular place for a quick look at what is on the calendar for the week. Since the greater Reno/Tahoe area is so abundant with activity opportunities, I can see this getting out of hand with listings. With that in mind, here is a rough sketch of the (loose) boundaries for getting events on these posts:

  • Active Events (Run, Bike, Hike, etc) or

  • Multimodal Advocacy (Trail Karma, Council Meetings, etc)

  • Truckee Meadows Local

  • Access Changes Impacting Trails (Fire, Construction, Other Events, etc)

If you are an event organizer, or just a participant that knows of something coming up, send me an email about it and you might see it on the weekly post.

This Week’s Events

  • Through June:

    • Sky Tavern Ski and Bike Park is fundraising for their next round of trail construction via a mountain bike raffle. More info at the link.

  • Tuesday, June 1, 5:30pm :

    • Tuesday Night Ride Group, as their name suggests, will have their weekly mountain bike ride. The ride changes location each week so check their Facebook group or join their google email group to get direct updates. This week (6/2) they are meeting at Galena Creek Park and rolling out around 5:30pm. Forecast is for the mid 90s so hydrate prior and pack sufficient water. If this is your first TNRG ride, know they don’t have a mass start or group guides so it’s on new riders to either bring their own friends or make some by introducing yourself.

  • Tuesday, June 1, 5:45pm :

    • Silver State Striders’ Tuesday evening group run/hike is departing from the Thomas Creek Horse Trailer Parking lot. Groups will have their choice of just the Dry Pond loop (6mi) or adding a 3 mile kicker up to the wilderness sign on the Thomas Creek side. Details on their website.

  • Thursday, June 3, 5:45pm:

    • Silver State Striders’ Thursday evening group run is departing from the Steamboat Ditch Crossing on Woodchuck Drive. Relatively flat out and back to Hole in the Wall along the ditch trail (~8mi). Parking at Woodchuck is limited to arrive early or park along Juniper Ridge. Details on their website.

  • Saturday-Sunday, June 5-6:

    • Kurstin Graham will be leading a bikepacking overnight ride in central Nevada. This ride will cover ~80 miles and 5000’ of elevation and participants are expected to be self supporting. More details at the FB Event page including links to the ride route map.

That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email and it might get listed. See you outside!
