Weekend Outlook 7/01-7/04, 2021

Thunderstorms are the theme of the season. I try to keep the front page updated if we have major water events, but these storms are generally very localized and can be very intense. For example, Wednesday night saw Spanish Springs get 4 hours of downpour while Peavine barely got a springkle. Tuesday, Damonte Ranch got blowing ash while the mountain was in sunshine. That’s all to say, If you are heading out in the afternoon, make a quick check of the hourly forecast and take a look at the sky where you’re headed so you don’t get caught out in one of these more dangerous storm cells.

As a reminder, RTC has fired up the new FlexRide route between Galena and Incline Village/Sand Harbor. $5 one-way for all drops except Sand Harbor (+$2 to cover park entry). Multiple drop-off/pickup locations up on the mountain. And the vans have bike racks. ;) More details at the link.

Trail Outlook

The awesome side effect of all these thunderstorms cycling water through the air and soil? Humidity! Anyone else notice how it feels more like Oakland or LA around here recently? This weekend gets plenty of storming on tap so again, mornings will be best conditions but the peak evening winds are still expected to be reasonable so dealers choice of summer outdoor options. At the moment, our Fourth of July is expected to be bluebird, moderately hot, and some breeze in the evening. I’d give fireworks a 50/50 on if they launch on time or go on wind delay. Overall another great weekend to be somewhere other than indoors. Enjoy!

As always, if you get out on the mountain, submit a trail report and let us know how it is. I’ll update the front page as reports come in.

Poeville Fire Drop 2020. As cool as it is to watch these tanker crews do their thing, they like to celebrate at home with their families too. Leave the fireworks to the pros please. (Photo Credit: Steve Timko, KOLO News)
