Weekend Outlook 5/14-5/16, 2021

*Quick programing note, I’m going to once a week and as needed updates for the dry season. It feels a bit silly to keep writing “Peavine is still dry” twice a week.*

Event Announcement:

This Saturday (5/15), the Silver State 50/50 running event will be going on throughout the day on the trails and at Rancho San Rafael. Expect extra runner traffic on Evans Canyon, Miner’s, Keystone, Rancho Connector, Total Recall, Norton’s Toll Road, Scrub Brush, and Mahogany Forest. If you want to just avoid racers, there are plenty of trails they won’t be on and you can find the trail maps for all lengths at the event website listed above. Otherwise, give them space, a waive, and encouraging words.

Trail Karma Opportunity:

Biggest Little Trail Stewards are hosting a trail work day this Saturday morning to buff out another new section of the sierra vista trail. RSVP still requested.Details in the link and on their Facebook events page.

Relatedly, if you have a volunteer opportunity around multimodal access on or around Peavine, email me and I will get it worked into the lineup.

Trail Outlook

If the big puffy clouds this afternoon didn’t give it away, thunderstorms are in the forecast this weekend. All day Friday as well as Saturday Morning or Sunday evening will be the best conditions if you want to avoid the clouds and possible spitty thundering. The brunt of the system is supposed to roll in mid afternoon Saturday and while there may be localized downpours, this doesn’t look like enough water to make the trails fragile. That being said, thunderstorms always carry a risk of very heavy localized dumps, hale, and lightning. Plan and pack accordingly.

UPDATE: It is more than enough water to saturate the surface. Precipitation expected to continue through the night into the early hours Sunday morning conditions may still be soft and standing water across the trail network .

As always, if you get out on the mountain, submit a trail report and let us know how it is. I’ll update the front page as reports come in.
