Weekend Outlook 2/24-2/27, 2022

Trail Karma Opportunity:

  • Biggest Little Trail Stewards are in search of a water truck or trailer to water down the pump track next week. They have a place to fill but need something that can transport the water and pump to hoses. If you can help please call Curtis at 775 232-8483.

Sierra Vista Park Side Notes:

Note: I’m going to run this for a few weeks to ensure the note about private property around SVP gets seen:

  1. If you see “Private Property” signs along the trails at Sierra Vista, please respect them. When the park was still a failing golf course and prior to selling to the City of Reno, the property owners gave all neighboring owners an option to purchase the land adjacent to each’s individual parcels. Most neighboring owners passed, but some now own what are effectively piers of land extending a few hundred feet into the park. Most notably, the land North and East of the gravel trail right at the beginner flow loop and intermediate jump trail on the uphill end of the park is, as the signs indicate, privately owned. To maintain good neighborly relations with those who live at the park edges, lets respect the signage where these private/public boundaries exist.

  2. The pump track is coming! Dirt work has begun near the drop zone area and is expected to continue through the first week of March. Please be cautious of heavy equipment and unexpected temporary trail impacts. I’m sure the crew will try to keep disturbances and hazards to a minimum, but a little flexibility goes a long way to everyone benefiting. Similarly, as tempting as it may be to poach a roll through or two, the fastest way for the pump track to get finished is by everyone riding other trails until the track is officially open.

  3. Dirt work is also expected soon on a new lower advanced flow line as well as some reshaping on the upper advanced jump line. All of the above comments about consideration and wide berth apply here as well. Update 2/25: Advanced line work is done and the trail builder has requested it be ridden and bedded in before the next moisture. Go enjoy!

Trail Outlook

Hidden mud and snow. Where the sunshine was able to reach, much of the new snow has evaporated but the extreme overnight lows really restricted that drying to full sun areas. Even low elevation trails such as in the Peavine Dam area had snow anywhere there was a hint of a shadow as well as plenty of peanut butter patches. While temperatures are expected to come off the low lows of this week, expect more wet spots and mud than last weekend even in the parks and lower elevation trails.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Dust over crust and high winds can make for variable and unstable top layers. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.
