Weekend Outlook 3/10-3/13, 2022

Note for dog owners:

  • Over the past few weeks I’ve been getting the dogs out on the mountain for longer off trail hikes in the ridges and canyons above Kings Row, Leadership Parkway, and Keystone Canyon. We have very consistently been spotting groups of coyotes at close range moving through or bedded down away from the main trails around 4-5pm. They have demonstrated general caution and disinterest in us, but are not showing significant fear. My dogs are slightly smaller than coyotes (~tall 25lbs). In general, if you are out with dogs in the late afternoon, or exploring off trail, you may want to plan to keep the pups leashed. We are in coyote territory and they will defend dens or fight back if harassed.

Sierra Vista Park Side Notes:

Note: I’m going to run this for a few weeks to ensure the note about private property around SVP gets seen:

  1. If you see “Private Property” signs along the trails at Sierra Vista, please respect them. When the park was still a failing golf course and prior to selling to the City of Reno, the property owners gave all neighboring owners an option to purchase the land adjacent to each’s individual parcels. Most neighboring owners passed, but some now own what are effectively piers of land extending a few hundred feet into the park. Most notably, the land North and East of the gravel trail right at the beginner flow loop and intermediate jump trail on the uphill end of the park is, as the signs indicate, privately owned. To maintain good neighborly relations with those who live at the park edges, lets respect the signage where these private/public boundaries exist. (See Photo Below)

  2. The pump track is done and needs burning in. If you have time, go ride it and enjoy!

Trail Outlook

Warm and midday gusty. Early and late Saturday and Sunday will likely be the calmest times to be out on the mountain. This most recent water is soaking and drying quickly and the fact that it rolled in warm before snapping cold means it may have taken a little bit of lingering snow with it. Much of the mid-mountain and below is open with limited wet areas. Above the Total Recall First Bench and the intersection of Crispy Bacon, Halo, and Bacon Strip is still high likelihood of snow and extensive mud as well as specifically in the areas of Snow Terraces, Halo between the R and Snow Terraces, and Halo west of Snow Terraces to Total Recall. If anyone ventures over toward Three Trees, Norton’s Toll Road, or Kiowa, please let me know how it looks over there. All the parks around the mountain are in great shape though the last/first stretch of the Sierra Vista Connector between the park and Avenida De Landa has been slow to clear of mud and snow.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. Conditions have been extremely exposure dependent as we get into spring proper. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.

The Beckworth Violets are blossoming around the midmountain right now but you have to look closely for these nickel sized bursts of color.
