Weekend Outlook 01/05-01/08, 2023

In Memoriam:

Janet Phillips

  • There are a handful of people in the Truckee Meadows that have had an outsized impact on our local trails. Janet Phillips was one of those people. Janet was the visionary and driving force behind the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail as well as a number of other charitable organizations in the valley. She and I were introduced in late 2019 and in some small ways those conversations shaped this website. Her passing is a great loss to our outdoor community. Her obituary can be read in full linked here on ThisIsReno.com. A number of different community groups are sharing tributes to Janet on the Tahoe Pyramid Trail facebook group page linked here. Next Wednesday (January 11) at 6pm is the 20th anniversary party of the Tahoe Pyramid Trail organization. RSVP is required so check the link here for RSVP and location details. I suspect this will be a packed house. Thank you, Janet, for giving us such an amazing trail and being such a steadfast trail advocate in the Truckee Meadows.

Weekend Events:

Here are the events that are on the radar for this weekend:

  • Thursday, January 05:

    • 8:00 am

      • Radical Adventure Riders of Reno (RAR) will be joining the peaceful march in support of Nevada tribes working to protect Thacker Pass. The march will gather at Reno Sparks Indian Colony Smoke Shop 2 (Golden Lane) and walk over to the Bruce R Thompson courthouse (Virginia Street). Patagonia will be providing warming space in their downtown retail store. For more information, follow @rar.reno on Instagram.

    • 5:45 pm

Trail Outlook

  • Wet and snow again this weekend. If the snow level stays high the rain may destroy a lot of the trailhead snow. Regardless, all trails in the valley are expected to be very wet for the entire weekend. If the roads are open, there will be plenty of powder over packed and groomed trails around Tahoe Meadows and Chickadee Ridge. With the holidays wrapping up and poor weather preventing travel from the west, this may be a good weekend to get the slopes to yourself.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. The incoming storm is expected to really increase avalanche risk in the region. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.

January 05, 2023 Conditions. Snow or very wet mud expected across the Peavine Trail network.
