Trail Outlook

  • Is it ground hog’s day, because this cycle of end of week storm followed by freeze, thaw, and warming puts me in the mood to write the same trail outlook over and over.

  • The warming trend this week and into weekend has been excellent for trail drying but the overnight freezes continue to protect shaded snow. Most trail segments on the mountain have snow patches either directly across large portions of trail or on the mountainside above and draining enough meltwater across them to keep the trails boggy. Right now, sections of Las Brisas and Keystone to Kings are just firm enough, but the last switch back on Keystone to Kings faces East and continues to hold some snow. Because all trails have some snow and mud, and we have another storm in the forecast for Tuesday, I’m leaving the forecast image on red for the entire network. On the East side of the valley, Hidden Valley Regional Park is really starting to get nice, at least inside the fences.

  • Sierra Vista Bike Park continues to be a mixed bag. The main gravel cart path is firm enough to ride and run, but there are a LOT of shaded patches crossing most of the single track so please continue to stick to just the cart path for now. Last Friday there was extensive snow on the drop zone and both pump tracks. The wind on Monday did a lot of drying for us, but please double check before dropping in on a feature that may still be easily damaged. The more we keep current trails pristine, the more we can focus on building new trails this year.

  • I (still) haven’t been able to get down to Carson City recently so any trail reports from down there would be appreciated. Trails east of Prison Hill along the Carson river tend to dry quickly and I know y’all are excited to get out in the sunshine. If anyone has eyes on dirt down South, send in a trail report and let us know where we can get some miles and smiles in.

  • Outside Northern Nevada, I’m hearing reports that the West Slope (Auburn, Rocklin, Folsom, etc) trails are firmed up nicely and riding and running really well. I’m sure if one were to post up on any of our local social media groups, there would be others rad outdoor enthusiasts willing to share gas to get over the hill for a day.

  • If you’re a mountain biker, now is an excellent time to beat the rush for spring bike maintenance at our local bike shops. Come March and April, wait times for annual fork and shock service can be as far out as May. Get your gear in for that tune up now so that you have a nice refreshed setup come prime spring conditions.

  • There are plenty of groomed trails around Tahoe Meadows and Chickadee Ridge. If you head up to use the groomed trails on foot, fatbike, or snowshoe, please stay right on the trails so that cross country skiers can enjoy the routes they have fundraised and volunteered to have up there. There is also enough snow that snowshoeing and fatbike riding in the Galena trail network is epic right now. Enjoy the winter wonderland and if you hit the resorts on Saturday, pack snacks and patience to sit in traffic.

If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. The snowpack is diverse and conditions are location dependent. Knowing where to look can make the difference of coming home.

If you get out, let us know what you saw by submitting a trail report.

Be kind, be safe, and enjoy.

February 16, 2023 Conditions. Snow or very wet mud expected across the Peavine Trail network.
