Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 01/02-01/08, 2023
In Memoriam:
Janet Phillips
There are a handful of people in the Truckee Meadows that have had an outsized impact on our local trails. Janet Phillips was one of those people. Janet was the visionary and driving force behind the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail as well as a number of other charitable organizations in the valley. She and I were introduced in late 2019 and in some small ways those conversations shaped this website. Her passing is a great loss to our outdoor community. Her obituary can be read in full linked here on ThisIsReno.com. A number of different community groups are sharing tributes to Janet on the Tahoe Pyramid Trail facebook group page linked here. Next Wednesday (January 11) at 6pm is the 20th anniversary party of the Tahoe Pyramid Trail organization. RSVP is required so check the link here for RSVP and location details. I suspect this will be a packed house. Thank you, Janet, for giving us such an amazing trail and being such a steadfast trail advocate in the Truckee Meadows.
Trail Outlook: Winter Wonderland
Snow almost every day this week. With very cold overnight lows, Monday and Tuesday mornings should be great for fatbikes and snowshoes on Peavine. If you can get up there, the upper mountain might even be deep enough for some backcountry skiing. Wednesday onward is solid storms with a mix of rain and snow. If everything stays cold enough, there is a chance of just building up more snowpack, but we might also see a warmish period that wipes out the trailhead level snow momentarily and continues to saturate the soil below. Either way, plan for snow adventures this week. Higher in elevation, Nevada Nordic grooms trails in the trees to the West of Tahoe Meadows for public usage. The trails are primarily designed for cross country skiing, but are also great for snow shoes and fat bikes. For more information and the latest grooming reports, check out their Facebook Group page linked here.

This is a mostly flat road ride friendly to all wheeled contraptions at an extremely social pace. For more information, follow @bikenightreno on instagram.

Silver State Striders will be running 12-13 miles of mixed paved and trail with plenty of hills starting and ending at Pinehaven. Traction devices are a must. Check their Facebook Group Page for more details. You can also find their training schedule on their website at this link.
If you are swapping the running and riding for a little back country sliding, check out the latest avalanche conditions over at Sierra Avalanche Center. This last storm laid a lot of heavy snow on top of the old crust and featured plenty of winds so avalanche conditions are high and variable. Knowing where to look and when to stay home can make the difference of coming home.
That’s what’s on my radar at the moment. If you know of something I missed or is coming soon, send me an email and it might get listed. See you outside!
All portions of the Peavine trail network are expected to have significant snow, ice, and/or mud this week. January 02, 2023.
