Is Peavine Dry?

Weekday Trail Outlook and Upcoming Events 3/07-3/13, 2022

Trail Karma Opportunity:

  • Biggest Little Trail Stewards is collaborating on an eagle scout’s project to fundraise for two new park benches at Sierra Vista Park. The fundraising goal is $1500 and only just launched, it is already almost 20% funded. These benches will be much like the benches around the Peavine trail network and will be much appreciated. Trail Outlook: Spring???

  • Excellent. That is the outlook. Trails are really starting to firm up and open up. Coming from Kings Row or Las Brisas areas, you can now get as high as the Crispy Bacon/ Bacon Strip/Halo Junction before running into significant snow. Keystone canyon and adjoining routes are clear as high as the Poedunk bench. All of the parks around Peavine are good to go. I haven’t had eyes or trail reports for upper Total Recall but I suspect you can reach the first bench now and Stagecoach may be clear and firm enough. There was a very large snow drift across Norton’s Toll Road wrapping around the north side of the mountain a few weeks ago so I suspect there is still significant water and snow around 3 Trees and Kiowa Lane. Halo between the R and Total Recall still features significant snow and mud, but you can connect upper Fisticuffs to the Bacons if you use the 4wd roads. Mid to upper mountain continue to have persistent snow, but the blue skies and above freezing temperatures may begin to open up more soon. The only weather in the forecast right now is significant wind on Wednesday afternoon and evening out of the North West.

Sierra Vista Park Side Notes:

Note: I’m going to run this for a few weeks to ensure the note about private property around SVP gets seen:

  1. If you see “Private Property” signs along the trails at Sierra Vista, please respect them. When the park was still a failing golf course and prior to selling to the City of Reno, the property owners gave all neighboring owners an option to purchase the land adjacent to each’s individual parcels. Most neighboring owners passed, but some now own what are effectively piers of land extending a few hundred feet into the park. Most notably, the land North and East of the gravel trail right at the beginner flow loop and intermediate jump trail on the uphill end of the park is, as the signs indicate, privately owned. To maintain good neighborly relations with those who live at the park edges, lets respect the signage where these private/public boundaries exist. (See Photo Below)

  2. The pump track is coming! Dirt work is ongoing) near the drop zone area. Please be cautious of heavy equipment and unexpected temporary trail impacts. I’m sure the crew will try to keep disturbances and hazards to a minimum, but a little flexibility goes a long way to everyone benefiting.

  3. For advanced riders, there is a new alternate advanced line that needs some traffic in order to bed in the trail before the next round of weather. Go have fun while the sun shines.

North East boundary of Sierra Vista Park. Blue line highlights the private parcels that extend into the original golf course lands. None of these parcels are fenced but most are signed as private. The North most pair comes right up the the start of the beginner flow loop and intermediate jump line start. Please respect the property owners’ signage. Parcels in the bottom left of this image, not highlighted in blue, are also park property (City of Reno).
