Weekend Outlook 9/02-9/06 (Labor Day), 2021

Forest Closures:

Due to fire risk and smoke, the national forest service has issued a forest closure for most forest ranger districts west of the California/Nevada state line. This includes the entire Lake Tahoe Basin. Some forest administered by the Humbolt-Toiyabe district are more nuanced about what and where restrictions are in place. See detailed notes at the top of the previous weekly events post here. Closure orders for the majority of California are linked here and for those areas in the Humbolt-Toiyabe district, see these two links here and here.

Currently, Truckee Meadows public lands east of the Stateline or Carson/Sierra crest are not impacted. I’ll update this post as I get additional information.

Trail Outlook

Temperatures are forecast to be very nice this weekend and no precipitation. Unlike this past week where the wind was pretty much straight out of the west and strong enough to keep the valley air quality decent, this weekend is moving into a low speed swirling pattern. Every few hours wind directions are expected to change so it’s a dice roll for guessing if the air will be good or we will be inundated with smoke. If you see blue sky, take advantage while you can but pack an n95 just incase.

Additionally, with the continued forest closures affecting Truckee, Tahoe, and now much of the Eastern Sierra, expect to see a few more trail users coming from nearby communities. With the smoke and added trail traffic, it’s a good time to focus on enjoying what outdoor opportunities we have and letting the rest just be what it is. Be kind, be safe, and if you get out, enjoy.
